Helotes is a city located in Bexar County, Texas. It is far northwest of San Antonio and is a part of the San Antonio-New Braunfels, Texas, metropolitan statistical area. The town has a long history. The town was originally a stage stop on the Bandera Road. In 1873, the town established an official post office. The first postmaster was Carl Mueller, who also owned the Helotes Stagecoach Inn. Later, in 1875, a Swiss immigrant named Francisco Menchaca acquired a Bexar preemption grant and built a home and mercantile store in the town.
The Helotes area has a pleasant climate year-round. Average winter temperatures are 57 degrees, while temperatures are milder during the spring and summer. In December, temperatures dip to around 52 degrees. In May, they rise to 77 degrees. During the summer months, temperatures are typically around 85 degrees. In November, they drop to 63 degrees, and occasionally there are freezes.
The name of Helotes, which means "corn on the cob," was inspired by an old farming town. The town developed around the floor of a stream crossing. It was a peaceful, farming town that thrived on corn. The community boasts of a strong economy and a high quality of life. In 1858, a Scottish immigrant purchased land in Helotes. The house served as a post office and stagecoach stop for cowboys driving cattle. In 1880, the town's heirs sold the property to Swiss immigrant Arnold Gugger, who built a home and mercantile store. In 1908, the Swiss immigrant Bert Hileman purchased the land. During the early twentieth century, the couple operated a general store, blacksmith shop, and saloon.
