The town was settled by Scottish immigrants in the late 1860s. The original settlement was a stagecoach stop and post office for traveling cowboys. In 1880, Dr. George Marnoch's heirs sold the property to Swiss immigrant Arnold Gugger. Gugger built a home and mercantile store in the town. He sold the property to Bert Hileman in 1908 and the Hilemans opened the town's first dance hall. The town also paved the old Bandera Road and opened a filling station.

A few years later, Francisco Menchaca worked as a ranch hand. Eventually, Menchaca secured a preemption grant for 160 acres from the state of Bexar in 1875.
