The town's history is a rich one. It was settled by Spanish and English settlers in the late 1800s. There was even a doctor in town named George Marnoch. His brother Gabriel Marnoch grew to be a respected naturalist. Helotes' historic downtown had a boarding house and dance hall, and cowboys would corral their stock near Helotes Creek. Eventually, Bert Hileman bought a place near the creek and began to build a gas station and paved the old Bandera Road. Hileman eventually sold downtown Helotes in 1919 as the population began to decline.

Helotes's weather is warm and temperate year-round. The average temperature in December is 53 degrees, while in February, the temperature drops to 58 degrees. In March, temperatures start to warm, reaching an average of 64 degrees. By May, temperatures reach 79 degrees. In June, temperatures can reach up to 85 degrees. By November, average temperatures drop to 63 degrees, although it is possible to experience a few frosts.

Helotes is a charming community with a small town feel. In Old Town, there is the Helotes Creek Winery, which makes 35 types of wine. The town also has a small historic district where visitors can tour the city. The town's history dates back to 1873, when it was an official stagecoach stop along the Bandera Road. Francisco Menchaca, who worked for the town's inn, secured a preemption grant from the Bexar County in 1875.

The town's population has historically been diverse. Eighty-five percent of residents are white, and twenty-five percent are Hispanic. The rest are black or African American. There is also a small percentage of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. There are about nine thousand people in the town.
