The city's population is comprised of a variety of demographics. Almost half of its residents are white, while the rest are Hispanic or Asian. In the late 1800s, Shavano Park was home to a small, undeveloped town, but today it is a city within a city. The city was originally settled around Olmos Creek in 1881 as a stagecoach and rail stop, and it was named for the local Indian chief, Shavano. This is where the city grew.
